Pocket doors fulfill a need for privacy and free wall space. They can be closed just a like a regular hinged door to provide privacy. But when they are in the open position, they retract into the wall, freeing up wall space that would normally have to be kept open to allow for a regular door to swing. While not as simple as installing hardware on a standard door, it is possible to install pocket door hardware yourself.

•1
Screw the pocket door track to the top of the rough opening. The rough opening should be a little more than twice the width of the door to allow it to slide back into the wall. Place one end of the track roughly 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the rough framing to allow for the jamb to be installed later. Make sure to place the wheeled hanger units in the track before installing.

•2
Place the door on sawhorses.

•3
Attach the two hanger plates to the top of the door. Place the plates 3 inches from each edge and tighten it in place using the provided screws. Pre-drill each hole to prevent splitting. The plastic locking levers on each unit should be on the same side of the door.

•4
Install the rubber bumper by screwing it into the middle of one of the edges of the door. This edge will become the trailing edge of the door and be inserted into the wall cavity, or pocket.

•5
Use a jig saw to cut a notch on the front side of the door to receive the door pull. Check the installation instructions to determine the proper size of the notch.

•6
Place the door pull in the notch and fasten it with the provided screws.
